In need of help

Hey everyone,
I don't know why but I don't really feel like writing poetry any more which has always been a sort of therapy in a way but now I can't be bothered to write short poems, instead I want to write a full length novel (okay not exactly a full lengh novel maybe about 250 pages long which is sort of a full length novel but back to the point). I was so excited to write something that I should be properly proud of and I had the story line all planned and the characters but now I don't know how to start the story off should I start with an action packed beginning to entice the reader or start with a short simple conversation between some minor characters setting the plot out for the reader.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that how do I make sure that the reader is interested enough in the first chapter to continue on reading to the end.
Or is it that I'm just wasting my time with trivial matters and I should just forget the dream of being a writer considering the fact I have such problems with not only how to grab the reader's attention but also in smaller facets of the story such as giving the book an edgy title, labelling the characters with remakable names and coming up with appealing names for such objects that don't already have names; objects that are made up from my own imagination.
The more I give it thought te more I start to convince myself that this whole "objective" of mine to writing a novel is a bad idea as there are other things to worry about far more then an unreachable goal I have set myself. And I'm only 17 but the thing is that I believe if you really want to do something with your life you have to start at a young age, you have to have a passion for the topic or you're just wasting your time.
If you can in any way help please comment.

If you want to do it then go for it! It's definitely not an 'unreachable goal'. And you don't have to write the beginning first, but even if you do, you can always go back and change things. Don't stress so much about it, just start writing the story you want to write. Lots of luck!

My suggestion would be don't worry too much about how to start or what the title should be. Just write whatever you want to say and it will grow over time. Most writers I know agree that the finished piece is nothing like what they started with so just go for it - get your story down and then go back and re-work the parts you are not so happy with. Good luck.

Hi iram24, don't worry. The main thing is that you have the story. Right now marketing, titling, naming characters etc is way ahead in the future. Get the story down and then worry about the detailing. You don't even have to write it in chronological order at the moment, if you have a good idea for a chapter write it now and edit it into the story later. The story is always of primary importance, the rest you can learn.
As an example, I wrote a 80K word novel a few years ago, It took me two years on and off to do it and I still can't think of a title for it.
When I had finally finished the thing, I sent it off to a couple of agents and received no positive response -Probably because my writing had not developed well enough to make it commercial- It now sits in a drawer gathering dust, but the main thing is that the story exists! One day I will take it out and re write it and may get lucky.
What I am trying to say is, enjoy your writing, write as often as you feel comfortable with it and it will get better and better. Write for the love of it, make yourself laugh and make yourself cry with your writing. You have no deadlines to meet and can afford to throw away what doesn't work while keeping the gems.
Keep at it.
