- If literacy and literacy attainment levels could be hypothetically replicated to structural engineering,for one mad instance,then quite a lot of our bridges,motorways,buildings , etecetera ,would , a) never have been completed, or , b) collapsed due to shoddy workmanship and failure to implement actual principles of engineering discipline and practice. To even have to restate what,I daresay, Philosophers in Antiquity called ,"the blindingly obvious", in this day and age ( to use a not often heard enough cliche ) is an indication of how far down the slippery slope our , (and I use the two often conjoined terms with just a tad of ironic and deprecating relish ), "Literacy" and "Education" have slipped .Although " plummeted " ,would be nearer the mark. The new OFSTED chief.,Class,.atten...shun!,Sir Michael Wilshaw has (according to my deconstruction of the Daily Mail 10/5/12 headlines) caused widespread shock,despondency and indignation throught the teaching professions by having the temerity to pronounce on the state of discipline standards within British schools. In effect there are no standards.There might indeed be a semblance of understanding of such an obviously archaic concept amongst "professionals at the chalkface" as wannabe pedagogues tend to glamourise and mystify there rather pedestrian and unremarkable vocation,especially at times of public castigation and criticism. Sir Michael..class,atten..shun! opined that mobiles be banned from schools and that other currently acceptable interruptions during lessons such as calling out,back-chatting etc also be considered ultra vires. Blimey,whatever next ? OFSTED are going to go the whole hog aren't they.Proper subjects,acquisition of knowledge.Kids 'll be leaving school fully able to read ,write and do their basic sums. Hence the appalling cacophany of disapproval from the chalkface proletariat,as if.
