Hello everyone out there,

What is it we want out of this web site? Well, I'll tell you what I want. I want positive criticism, helpful advice and somewhere I can discuss with others in the same boat as me how I can become a better writer. I'm not interested in hearing that my submission was good. That tells me nothing. Or perhaps it does, in so much that it is so bad nobody could find anything worth saying to save it from the wastebasket. There is so much of a story that can be commented on. We are all guilty of mistakes in grammar, wrong words, clumsy constructions, mixed metaphors, circumlocution, and verbosity. Yes, with fine pruning and polishing these can be rectified. But what about those errors that are missed. Most of the techniques of writing is done subconsciously but spelling, punctuation, syntax although secondary considerations are exceedingly important. No matter where you are with writing, novice, amateur or professional, you are all in a learning situation. But remember the real joy of writing comes only with practise. We can all help each other. Individually we all have some thing to give. Anybody out who agrees with me?

I certainly do agree with you. When I rejig the front page of this website I will make its goal a little more prominent.

I agree fully with your statement and if I had more time then I woul give more than a few good words although I find even the smallest encouragement helpful in keeping me going.

I must say that some of the points that have been made on my work so far have been very helpful and I will incorporate them into my work ongoing.

In an attempt to make critiquing easier and quicker to do, we've now implemented a new feature of this website.

Open any article in the "Review my work" forum and there is now a "critique this article" link which you can click which allows you to critique an article in a questionnaire format.

The critique template / questionnaire was designed by rowland. Many thanks for that rowland.

If any other author has a great idea regarding how to improve this web site, please contact me..

A good criticism, in my view, isn't altogether "nice". So I'm with you on that score. I'll tell it "like it is". But it's only an opinion, and one of an amateur author, at that.

I hope I haven't offended anyone in my two (?) critics I've given so far. All writing is good, because we've TRIED.
The Unforgiving Minute

Hi Rowland,

Only just stumbled upon this entry, and, on the whole, I agree with its sentiment. However, your entry does have a few grammatical and spelling errors that need tidying up. Rather ironically, you have forgotten to place a question mark after 'what about those errors that are missed'. Also, it should be 'most of the techniques of writing ARE done subconciously, but spelling, punctuation, AND syntax, although secondary considerations, are exceedingly important'. You need to add several commas, and change 'is' to the plural form, 'are'.

A semi-colon after 'writing' wouldn't go amiss either. Another comma is needed after 'But remember' and 'Individually', and practice is spelt with a 'c', not an 's'. Furthermore, I think the final sentence is missing a 'there'.

Sorry if this seems a little 'unforgiving', but, strictly speaking, I am adhering to your own advice!!
