Things I've learned as a Writer

I feel like I've come a long way since I first started writing, and though I know I still have a long road to travel, I wanted to share a few things I've learned, some about writing, and some about life.

1) Friendships are fragile. They are always being put to the test. Sometimes they fail, and you are forced to leave friends behind, or you may even come out being enemies. True friendships are the ones that, though not always unscathed, make it out of the challenges stronger than they were before.

2) Nobody's perfect. I know, it sounds like a cheezy song, but it's true. In real life there are no perfect people, because everyone's view of perfect is different. In books, perfect people are boring. Everyone has their strengths and weakeness, their fears and secrets, and, my favorite, their lovable quirks. In books I love writing about those. One character may be unable to resist a book. Another may love cats so much that they adopt way to many. Everyone has a lovable quirk, though it might be hard to see or appreciate.

3) Writing is hard work. You can't just work on something when you feel like it, or when the inspiration strikes you. It's a 24-hour job. Sometimes, when you force yourself to write, to keep shooting out words, it can turn out to be your best work.

4) Authors borrow from each other. It's inevitable. True, you can't completely rewrite the book in your own words with the same plot and characters. What fun is that? But sometimes something in this book is so good, you have to use it in your own way, in a different book, or a background character in that book strikes your fancy as someone who might have their own story in a different setting with a new name and persona.

I might add stuff to this later on, but these are the main things I've learned as a writer. I hope it helps!
                                                              ~ Gate Keeper

lol fixed typos. Have I mentioned I'm not a math person? =P

Too right. Sometimes it's hard to bear these things in mind when you are writing, especially that no-one's perfect, though I would take that beyond the book and apply it to yourself (not specifically you, but all of us.)

I think too many of us get wrapped up in making things perfect but it can't be done. If we read anything we have written then there will be things that we would do different even after the 1,000th edit. Getting work to a stage that you are happy with and leaving it there is one of the hardest things that I find with writing.

At first I wasn't really sure if this belonged here, but I posted it anyway. I'm really happy everyone has like it, and thanks for your post =). I lost a lot of friendships this past year, but I felt like it strengtened the ones that I kept, and that gave me the courage to let go of those who weren't good for me. That's kind of what brought this on. I'm glad you guys liked it.

Advice is always welcome. I, for one, love to know how other writers feel about writing; how they manage it into their lives etc. It is hard, and I don't know about anyone else but for me it's doubly hard because my family and friends don't realise how dedicated I am about it.
