My country's vocabulary.

Im sitting near the T.V listening to the election. The speaches, opinions and the much feared -Outcome. Listening to the words "vote" and "counting process" and listening to names like Jacob Zuma and our nonchalant president,Mudlandle a name I cannot even spell because as far as I know the only reason he is our "president" is because of his fathers work during the apartheid era and then there is also the fact that he wont even be president long enough for the ink to dry .Im struggling to understand how he could humilliate and kill everything his father and many others have done for my "free" country because still we base our votes on SKIN COLOUR. There is a woman named Helen Zille who I feel has done so much for the Western Cape but it is all washed over by the fact that she's white.
I understand that we are afraid we'll fall into the same situation as before but I strongly believe that we should stop being prejudice.Theres no space in this day or age.I am 14 and I understand how this political situation could turn sour. Why can't everybody else? but right now i can't help but dwell in fear at the fact that everything could come crashing down around me and that my government, the group of people who will rule me and lead me will be again using those words "corrupsion" and "fraud" but what scares me most is the fact that after so many years of oppression we turn around and opress ourselves. What happend to the word "freedom"?

Hey, I'm out here in California and feel the same way. I've been told so many times to ignore politics, but kids are humans too and we do care about the world. I also feel that everything could come crashing down at any moment. It's not your fault- whatever happens, make the best of it. 'Times are tough', but we're all in this together. I try to be extremely happy and brighten everyone else's mood, because I know they might not have the will to smile on their own. Still, I get bogged down just like everyone else. Things are definitely cooking in the political world- so think of how you are a part of history. Write about it, too. You can look back later and be amazed. If it's really bugging you, write a letter to a news channel, magazine, or even to the government itself! It's surprising how good you feel after doing something. Hope things start to look up soon.

Wishing you the best,

Hi Simone. You wonder what happened to the word freedom. The 'West', as in many parts of the world, is suffering from the erosion of freedom, particularly, freedom of speech. I live in the UK and to millions of people around the world, we have an ideal life. But in reality, we are unable to say what we think, in case we are arrested for upsetting certain people. The police, especially in London, are in the news for attacking legal demonstrators with batons and fists. All this in what is supposed to be a civilised country.
You say you are 14 years old. Your generation, when a little older, will hopefully have the opportunity to change the way your country is run. All those who want freedom must fight for it, preferably through the ballot box or becoming politicians. But believe me, corruption in government is in every country in the world. The few in power tend to look after the few, not the many.

Totally agree with Reiner. It is political correctness gone crazy. Freedom is when we all begin to see other through the eyes of mercy and when we conquer barriers like race, colour, religion and.......... so much more.

Speak up and one day, you will be heard like Mandela.

Writing about is is a start.

Well at least you've made a stand by commenting. A situation like this I always come back to that old advert for coke cola song 'I'd like to teach the world to sing' and somehow it makes things a little brighter! Keep your spirits up.

Hi Simone. I used to live in SA and now live in England. I'd love to know what you think of this piece: http://www.writerscircle.biz/Contrib/Threads/1258.aspx

Just for the record- in ancient Rome people wondered if they should go ahead and have children because things were so rotten and they didn't want to bring children into such a doomed world. Believe me the world is a much better place today than it was when I was a child and it will keep on improving because we are genetically programmed to improve our situations. Don't be scared -just make good decisions when the time comes. You write well and you think deeply - well done!

Wow, you present a strong message here. If racisim can't be stopped, then what hope there is to stop sexism, xenophobia, misogynism, or prejudice in general. We keep improving the qualities of life, yet there always has to be someone full of animosity. I know where this is coming from because my people--the autistic people--are being oppressed like in South Arfica. God bless we can get this straightened out.

God bless
