Grognoths and Grotworts

Grognoths and Grotworts

The Grognoths are coming, they're everywhere
Under the carpets and under the stairs
The Grognoths are tiny, too small to be seen
But look at your body, you'll see where they've been

They rest in the daytime but all through the night
They're out on the town where they're having a bite!
They crawl over everything, chomping their way
And never stop eating until break of day

The Grognoths are greedy, with two mouths in their heads
They feed off your flesh as you lay in your beds
But Grotworts are waiting, eager to fight
Laying siege to the Grognoths until it's daylight

So as you lay sleeping may your dreams be sweet
For a war is ensuing right under your sheet
Millions of Grognoths and Grotworts will die
Feeding survivors as you sleep by and by

The battle is over but the war isn't won
The struggle is ancient and it goes on and on
For the millions that died there are millions more
They fall from the ceiling and crawl through the floor

Now is that a bald patch I see on your head
Or where Grognoths and Grotworts are extremely well fed?
What help can I offer? I've nothing to say
Except... Work through the night and sleep through the day!

Kids would love this. Beautifully written, though unless there's a reason why the names are Grognoths and Grotworts I would suggest chaging one to make them more dissimilar.

Good job.

Cute! Reminds me of Dr. Seuss - and I could just imagine a children's book of it with his style of illustration.

Just one thing: where you wrote 'lay,' it should be 'lie.' My language teacher would go crazy over that one.

Happy writing! ;)

Many thanks for all your comments.

I have no idea why I named the creatures Grognoths and Grotworts. They just came to me and I liked them. The Grog's and the Grot's are similar creatures feeding off human skin and each other. Well, not really, but you know what I mean.

It took a while for me to search and sort this one out; (lay in bed). It appears that to use lay in bed is more commonly used but the correct form seems to be lie in bed. Thanks to Zion for pointing it out.

Wonderful poem Reiner - this needs to be read aloud to a class of gawping gasping children and spoken with as much expression as the poet can muster. I love the names and I'm pretty sure childen will too - they process similar sounding words much better than adults probably because they are easier to remember. If I had time I would read this to children and get them to draw/paint what they think the Grognoths and Grotworts look like.

I think Zion's hit the nail on the head commenting on a likeness to Dr. Seuss' kooky offerings! Both very well written and entertaining.
