A letter to my wife - part 2

Well, Gwendolyn, who could resist such an offer. It would take a greater man than I. (I use that term, loosely, of course). I dropped Nappy like a sack of potatoes. Before you could say," hotter than the hubs of Hell", I was standing before this ugly creature named Faust. He explained again what he wanted. We engaged in the customary dickering of two earnest business men. The deal was signed with his blood. Work began. He'd wanted to be a handsomer so I immediately changed his appearance more to his liking-a bit of flesh off here, a tad less chin droop, a pinch off the waist and he was the gay cavalier he'd always wanted to be. I must confess, he did look rather debonair. I shared all the knowledge of the
Universe that was mine to share. I showed him the effects of my wondrous influence on the worlds beyond the stars. He saw my people laboring diligently among the masses, setting up cities, religions and governments. But was he impressed? Was he satisfied? Not on your life! At that moment, a pox-faced peasant woman sauntered by on her way to Mass. She was caressing a crucifix as she went. Gretchen, I think was her name. Faust stared at her. I recognized the look in his eye.

"I simply must have her," said he.

My heart sank. ( I use that term loosely, of course). " You can't have her. She belongs to."

"You promised. A contract is a contract."

I sighed. "I'll do my best,. But I can't promise."

"You better. I must have her."

Well, Gwendolyn dearest, I won't go into what I was forced to do to win over that little strumpet. I had to dig deeply into my bag of tricks. To make a long story short, soon they were doing things which even made me blush. They killed her mother so they could fornicate freely. They had a child. Grethen drown it in the river. There was no satiation point once she got a taste of the world's
lusts and pleasures. They wanted more and more and more.

One day Faust came to me with his copy of the contract. Gwendolyn, I swear, I wanted to tell him to go to Hell until I realized I'd have to put up with him throughout all eternity.

"I'm bored," whined the sniveling creature." You have failed to excite me."

"But I gave you exactly what you wanted and more."

Gwendolyn, would you believe he threw the contract in my face- Me-the Prince of Darkness-the great Mestophecles?

My darling Gwendolyn, as you can see, my ego is bruised. I am a beaten man. ( I use that term loosely, of course). What hurt me was when the creature said he was going over to the Other Side and join a monastery. That was the final blow.

I miss your loving arms, Gwendolyn. I'm in the Twentieth Century at the moment. Keep the home fires burning. I'll be home as soon as the little man with the big mustache is firmly in my grasp.

Your loving husband,

Mestophecles
