Acceptance

(As a therapist, I see a number of client's who feel unaccepted by others. I wrote this from my clients' viewpoint of themselves and their perception of the world they live in).

Why have I been created the way I am?
Made to face the world; sometimes an unfriendly place,
Being criticized and so harshly judged,
By people who don't even know me.

No possibility of changing who I became at birth,
My only desire to live life; embraced by others,
Is it too much of an expectation,
To be treated with dignity and respect from humankind?

Why must I experience this wrath?
In a world filled with beauty; why do I feel so ugly?
All I've ever wanted is to be loved,
Allowed to share this earth in peace.

I'm here to fulfill my life's journey,
To enjoy God's creation; co-exist in harmony,
Will I ever be able to gain equal status,
In an existence with no patience for differences?

I think this poem relates to many people for different reasons, myself when I was told by a teacher at school that i would never get by in life like that, because of my Dislexia, but I proved them all wrong and I struggled all the way! good work.

Thank you Happybird and Debbie for your feedback. I work alot with adolescents and it's sad to see just how much someone's negative comment (especially from a parent) can change "who they are as a person". Resiliency is a wonderful thing. However, not all people are fortunate enough to have the resiliency to rise above it. I'm so glad that you were able to rise above it Debbie!
