The other day my sister and I were talking and at some point during the conversation and I don't really know why, the hamburger was mentioned. I told my sister why the hamburger is called the hamburger. Now once upon a time many German people emigrated to America. Start new lives, change of scenery... who knows why? But they did. There is a town in New York state called Hamburg. Now people claim that the town was already established and named thusly BEFORE the arrival of the German settlers. But, the invention of the hamburger is widely attributed to the town of Hamburg, New York. So this new beef sandwich needed a name. And the word "burger" denotes someone who comes from a particular town, i.e. Hamburger is someone who comes from the town of Hamburg. That's why they named this new food product the hamburger... because it comes from the town of Hamburg.
I told my sister it was like "beefburger"... so called because it was invented in the town of Beefburg. It was a joke obviously there is no such town, and I knew that my sister wouldn't fall for it. Not her, not my sister... who is the most intelligent of the family by a margin (not a big one though haha) she would see through my ruse. She would know that I was joking, I was waiting with bated breath to be reprimanded for my stupid joke.
She looked at me in disdain...
"Beefburg?" She said, her brow furrowed and wrinkled with a combination of bemusement and annoyance.
Then her eyes widened, and she looked at me as a small child looking at a wise old teacher. There was wonderment in her eyes, a curiosity, an inquisitiveness... she opened her mouth once again...
"Is that really a place?"
Beautiful.
