I am working on my new story and am all ready to get started... except for the names. I have been looking at all kinds of things and nothing seems to fit. Anyone got any suggestions?

It depends on the character...
Try http://www.behindthename.com/ for lots of different names- it tells you the meaning of the names in
different languages.
Hope this helps!

What kind of book is it? I write fantasy almost exclusively so with names I tend to open a non fiction
book with words that I wouldn't normally use and just lift sections that sound right out of them.

This would probably be less effective in a non-fantasy, though it may be worth a try.

Hope this helps.

Gatekeeper,

I'm not sure if it'll work for you but what I did was list all the names of everyone in my family, relatives,
friends and acquaintances. I listed a few of their quirks and the rest stayed in my mind. All of my
grandchildren became secret agents. They're not allowed to read my book yet but they knew they were in
the book and were so thrilled when I showed them some pages with their names on it.

There were plenty of characters where I'd consulted for and those clients I dealt with. The ones I didn't
like I used them as villains (I had a ball putting their descriptions together) and those I like as my
protagonists. Then I'd mix and match first names and last names. Finally, I'd match the names with whatever
character I'd be working on and focus on their physical character, embellish a few, and I'd make them
stand out or be subdued. Sometimes, when you hear a name, what does it conjure? For instance, you come
across an Ethel, or Edna . . . give them a wisp of grey hair and voila, you'd have a grandma or an aunt
or a mother. Then put her in a fantasy mode, you might get Exthel or Aunt Ednam. I don't know, I'm just
making it up as I go along. Then take the nicest quality of an aunt and expound on it for Ednam, give
her the quality of a saint and make Exthel eat humans. :-)

Hope it helps.

Oh wow, thanks for all your help guys! I've got all the names settled, except just this one. She's a really
complicated character, a witch who is very powerful and uses Ways (portals) to travel to different places
and worlds. Shes not really the main character, but she is very important. I'd thought I had settled on
Runa for her, but it just dosn't seem right. Any suggestions?

ok... now I'm just trying to decide between Robin and Haru..... but I'm kinda leaning towards Haru.....
hmmmmmm......

I think Haru would be better. Robin seems quite young and cheeky almost, not really like a powerful witch.
