Philip was helping to build up the trade, soon making friends with a set of the bikers who frequented the pubs in the area, and whilst the other two pubs still had the lions share, we were now getting more and more calling.
One particular set of bikers had started to have there meetings in the pub.
It was at one of these meeting nights that I had my first real frightening experience. About twelve of the lads where sat having finished the meeting, just chatting.
I had just served last orders to them. When in walked some Hells Angels, a biker's chapel from out of the area. I looked at our lads and was immediately given the thumps up to serve them. So I relaxed a little thinking that the Hells Angels had just called in to see our lads.
However, after being served the Hells Angels went down to the opposite end of the room, and stood in a line facing them.
Oh hell, the shits definitely going to hit the fan was the thought that sprung to mind.
It was probably the longest fifteen minutes of my life, as both groups never moved, looking at each other no one speaking. Their was only about four other people in the pub at the time, believe me they also thought it was going to go off. They quickly drank up and left.
The visiting Hells Angels then drank up, most had Newcastle Brown bottles, one by one they came up to the bar putting the bottles or glasses on the bar saying thank you landlord, and then walked over to our lads, walking in a line facing them saying nothing, then out of the pub. Phew I thought thank god that's over, then our lads got up brought there empties to the bar thanks John they said.
"Gosh I thought we were in for a right old battle" I mumbled.
"Never in our home John don't ever worry your pub is safe with us, no one will do anything in a chapters meeting place". See you tomorrow the president said
Well it was scary, but in all honesty like most people who have not had any contact with these type of bike club's. They are very suppressive and overpowering in their demeanour, but in reality, they are in most cases very loyal, who respect the place they call home.
