Falling Man

A falling man, a statue in flight,
The darkness has fallen, although it's not night,
Another lost soul in an ocean of doom,
Another dead body in need of a tomb.

***

Early morning, the last day of my life,
I never said goodbye, to my daughter and wife,
I never told you I loved you, I just hope that you knew,
That in my last moments, I thought only of you.

Office as usual, a coffee in hand,
Men and women in suits independently stand,
Thousands of desks, lined up in rows,
Letters are scattered from good friends and foes.

My desk is as normal, it's never been clean,
The highest pile of papers you'll ever have seen,
A photo of my daughter, a photo of my wife,
Memories of the good times, memories of my life.

A sudden crash and silence looms,
For a few lost seconds, the unknown doom,
Shouting and screaming, smoke fills the air,
Running from room to room, sprinting up the stairs.

Serpent like flames lick at the walls,
People are sprinting through bustling halls,
Calling up their family, calling up their friends,
Wishing more than anything, their lives wouldn't end.

Standing so high above the street,
Where hundreds of people silently weep,
Our chance of survival seems just so small,
Would it be easier to step out and fall?

So much is happening, my head is reeling,
Some people are hugging, others praying while kneeling,
Phoning and crying, hurriedly writing,
Some giving up, others still fighting.

I stoop to the floor from the stifling heat,
Crawling round my office, grappling for my seat,
I try to phone my house but nobody is there,
I wish they knew I love them, I wish they knew I care.

Then finally my choice seems clear,
My mind controlled by overpowering fear,
I make my way, slowly, up the winding stairs,
Gulping in deep breaths, my final breaths of air.

And as I stand alone once more,
I make my choice and close the door,
There's no escape there's no way back,
Although it's bright, the world seems black.

Will I just be another stain on this tragic day,
Another lost soul who died on the way,
Will I be a number, or will I be a name?
To you is everyone exactly the same?

I take a step towards the edge,
I lean my head over the ledge,
The world so huge, below my feet,
I close my eyes, accept defeat.

I pray for everyone who's died,
Without the chance to die with pride,
For every unnecessary death of war,
And hope to god there'll be no more.

I want my daughter to be proud,
Of her daddy, here, above the crowd,
I want her to know that I stood tall,
Until my last step, and now I must fall.

This is the first time I read a first person account of someone who "fell" to death on 9-11... such haunting images and desperate emotions and tragic consequences ... you brought it home all over again! A masterpiece!

you are good at writing tragic poems, you can really make readers feel the falling man's emotions.
