How Do I Say 'Goodbye' When I Could Hardly Say 'Goodnight'

I tried my best to hold back my tears
As I struggled to smile to my friend
She waved at me with that sad look in her eyes
As if telling me, 'Goodnight but don't go yet'.

It breaks my heart to see my dearest friend
Lying in her sick bed not knowing what lies ahead
With a heavy heart I lifted my hand and waved back
Whispering "I love You" and "take care of yourself".

As I drove home, memories kept coming back to my mind
It was just a few months ago that we had our photo taken
Everyone was so happy, laughing, jumping and joking around
That would surely embarrass our kids if they could see us.

I wish I could turn back the time so we can be kids again
So innocent and unmindful of everything around us
Always dreaming and wishing for the stars
And all the beautiful things that life can offer.

As I was nearing home, reality painfully hit me back
Knowing in my heart that my best friend is very ill
As I watch her slowly becoming to be a different person
Only God Almighty has all the answers to our prayers.

I know my best friend is a real fighter and a survivor
Through all her life, she does not easily give up
But what if the inevitable happens to her
How do I say 'Goodbye' when I could hardly say 'Goodnight'?

I guess possum's poetry about suffering is a sequel to yours, like you said, libran88
And as poignant a poem
I can feel your fear of losing your friend
And I can sense you're closer to her -- like you've known her all your life

I could feel your pain, I could feel your fear. I reckon we're on the same boat at the moment. It's a very sad poem but beautifully written.

Thank you for your prayers and good wishes, bellisimo. Yes, it is a real situation and we are hoping for a miracle. We can only trust in Him.
