The Black Rose

There are many flowers that you can buy
With vibrant colours that catch the eye
But the most alluring flower in sight
Is the rose with petals black as night.

She bewitches all with her dark aroma,
Her modest hue speaks of gothic glamour.
But whilst other roses disguise their thorns,
'Beware my deadly spikes' she warns.

Many have eyes for the crimson rose,
She cries 'look at me!' with a boastful pose,
But the black rose needs no display of colour
To enchant all eyes that gaze upon her.

But there is more on closer inspection,
Mystery shrouds her dark complexion
Her secret spell is part of her art
The midnight gown conceals her heart.
                                                                    ~Written 10/03/10

Wow I love this, it is so lovely and the rhyme scheme is just perfect. It's such an interesting and creative topic to choose and it works amazingly well. Well done!

This poem has a really nice flow. It is really mysterious to me, yet it
is so beautiful too. You put a lot of things into this one poem. Well done!

A poem which effortlessly keeps pace through its use of rhyming couplets with a quick and engaging rhythymic style. Not an easy trick in itself but one that when pulled off, works as shown here to fantastic effect.
It is good too in its singling out for special treatment the eponymous Black Rose. You bring to life what (so i believe) is dead to nature, draping it luxuriantly it seems to me, and thus hiding under said 'midnight gown' (I like this) its true enigmatic nature.
Apart from the kid's rhyme 'Roses are red ... Violets are blue ... etc. the most famous 'Rose poem I know is William Blake's very short and rather good (see below) 'Oh Rose, thou art sick!

I read somewhere once that black is not a colour at all as most people think. Instead, black is the (negation) or absence of colour! In this sense, I cannot help feel this black rose is an object not admired in and for itself. And just to freak you and anyone else reading this out would add that - rather it is admired more for what it says and reveals about its 'Midnight gown' draped admirers themselves.
Good stuff!
                                           Oh Rose, thou art sick!
The invisible worm
That flies in the night,
in the howling storm

Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy.
And with his dark secret love,
does thy life destroy.
                              William Blake
