The Blue Folder - Thirty-Two

THIRTY-TWO

The LOFT
Zurich, Switzerland

The LOFT sprawled out from the elevator onto a landing that led to a 'three-step' up to the main floor. Underneath the false floor ran kilometers of cables that connected and interconnected all monitors, servers, consoles and other electronic devices that made up the command center. Like the BASEMENT, this place had to cover almost an entire floor, the size of a city block. The interior glowed from the lights of several huge monitors hanging from rafters, arranged around the perimeter at irregular intervals.
The agents moved around glass-partitioned spaces with ease and the whole stretch appeared to be one whole area of unobstructed view, owing to the tempered clear-glass partitions serving as walls. Each cubicle was wide enough to accommodate four large oak desks and inside the glass cubicles, the assets worked at their assigned tasks. This was a huge operation. It gave the occupants a view of other covert agents without getting up from plush, black leather, swivel seats.
Valdez sat across Frank in one of the glass partitions for ease of communication. It was 5A.M. in Lagos, 6A.M. Zurich, Central European Summer Time, when Valdez fired up the satcom equipment. Frank eased in his chair to monitor the servers and made sure audio and video were all crystal. With Interpol's permission, Valdez commandeered a satellite on loan from the US CIA/NSA to float over Lagos and patch the necessary images and A/V link protocols to the team who at this time were having a quick breakfast on board the yacht.

Hi Grampa Pogi, I enjoyed this part of your novel. I don't know if that's because I have a military/engineering background, but I thought that the dialogue sounded very believable, and I also I found the description of the LOFT fascinating.
In some of the earlier chapters, I could not understand why there was so much information given on computers/communication systems as it seemed to have little relevance to the story, but in this section it all works.

I don't want to say bravo don't change a thing, as I am not sure if there is a technical overload for your average target reader, but I found it very interesting. I still have some nagging doubts about chapter 19 -sorry- but I thought that this piece was great.

Churchmouse,

Thanks for your feedback. I myself had trouble understanding those encryption protocols I'd written :-).

Seriously, it's one of those BS fillers that *really* exist in the real world. Ordinary readers will just brush through it but those in the *know* would appreciate the uniqueness of those items.

As for Chapter 19, it was one of their unfortunate *drawbacks* and the story (19 included), taken as a whole, would gel. Submitting in pieces here does not give the novel a lot of credence and I don't want to give up the real *story* by submitting everything, which as you'd know wouldn't be good. However, it would be safe to say that all the chapters would fit together and depending on who the editor would be (if not me), the story might be chopped further or there might be some areas to be expanded.

I've got the whole story set and all I need is time to finish it.

It's really quite enjoyable to *see* the LOFT in my mind's eye and then writing it for others to *see*.

Thanks again.

The enemy must be licking their chops after reading this chapter, Grampa
Did a few airports and transportation in my architectural practice
Should've had you with me to do the field investigations
and take care of the security and communications program requirements

Thanks MnmnI,

Next time the covert assets would build another OC, I'll suggest for Frank and Megan to get in touch and ask for your architectural design advice. :-)

I'm now on Chapter 37 . . . it's getting there :-)

Cheers,
Grampa
