I Am Alive

I am alive.
I live because
I work hard.
To the fields I go,
Every morning,
Seven days a week.

I am alive.
I live because
My students need me.
To the school I go,
Every afternoon,
Six days a week.

I am alive.
I live because
My family needs wood.
To the forest I go,
Every evening,
Seven days a week.

I am alive.
I heard on the news
My nation seeks fame.
Into space they go
To show the world.
A super-power.

I am alive.
But barely so.
I wish my nation
Would think of me.
To show they care.
A super-power.

I have been reading and thinking about the space programmes that so many nations are "into" right now, and was just wondering what these countries would be like if some of these colossal funds were to be channelled towards the basic needs of their people like proper homes, access to clean water and reliable electricity, free or cheap education, public transportation...

Of course exploration of the heavens above do contribute to the advancement of our technology and eventually to our way of life, but if even the base of Maslow´s hierarchy has not been satisfied for its people, how can they be a super-power???

This is a very lucid poem. Wonderful you mention Maslow's hierarchy of needs too. There is something universally true about Maslow (my wife introduced me to it a few years ago...) Governments - superpowers or not - never foster the ideal way of life. There is always the wrong emphasis on everything. Who cares about sending a rocket into space... it is for the betterment of nobody.

I was once told when writing a poem write to allow the reader to fill in his thoughts to the poem you have achieved this.

Hey!
I love this poem. It shows so many different aspects of 'everyday life'!

Very nice job.
It simply shows different peoples' point of view in few words I am impressed at how well you "stepped into other peoples' shoes" and described their thoughts, without maybe even knowing of a person like that.
