Dinner and a Show
It is late on a summer night, the breeze is gentle and the stars are shining brightly on our little corner of the world. And then."Dinner is ready" can be heard throughout the house.loudly shouted into every room. Everyone is looking for someone; ice is crashing into glasses like icebergs striking the Titanic, plates rattle like the San Francisco earthquake has struck again, only this time in our kitchen! Most days we jockey into position for our seats; having two dining tables we still wind up eating at the island in the middle of the kitchen.
We wait patiently as the little one says, "Grace", thanking the Lord he talks fast (that's why he was chosen). We just stop wherever we happen to be at the time. Bowls of steaming food cover the island, there is no elbow macaroni or room on this particular night. We reach across, over , under and around for what we want. We even pass things to each other on our forks! We are not embarrassed, we just happen to be really hungry.
It takes us roughly twenty minutes to destroy our food. We could kill it in less but we do use some manners. For instance we use linen napkins, which I happen to love---my sister concedes it to me although she is a fan of the community dishtowel method herself. On any given night we have extra guests for dinner. Why? Well because we are all good cooks and anyone is welcome here.or maybe they just come for the show!
