I never was a shining hero, on a charger pure and white
but that was how you saw me, when I held you in the night
When I banished all your nightmares, kept your fears at bay
stood between you and the darkness, until the dawn of day
In my memory are many deeds that you must never know
my selfish, craven silence gave your love a chance to grow
in the warm of your devotion, though my scars will never heal
a spark of love began to grow, this I never thought to feel
I'm not looking for forgiveness, or for the world to understand,
accept me as you see me, I just want to be your man
I don't deserve a second chance, never tried to take the first
but for you I'll give my very best, and you'll never see my worst
You tamed my inner demons, bound them with your chains of love
tenderly wrapped my iron fists in a gentle velvet glove
brought your light into my darkness, soothed my troubled soul
and in one moment of redemption, made my shattered spirit whole
Now you have gone into the dark, left me in endless night
but your love, there in the rising tide, is a beacon shining bright
A storm of rage is pushing hard, but for you I hold my ground
and the memory of you, smiling, still keeps my demons bound
