As I was walking down the street, I came upon a fish - with feet!
I must say, he looked fine in his blue hat and coat, with a collar and tie around his throat.
I just stood and stared in amaze, thinking aloud, 'Is this a new craze?'
'No my dear', the fish stopped and said. Well, when I heard him speak I could have dropped dead!
You see, I have a goldfish who swims round and round, but never, never, NEVER has he EVER made a sound.
'My dear', the fish said, 'you look quite white. I hope I haven't startled you, do you feel alright?'
But before I could answer him he took me by the hand and said, 'My dear girl, let me help you understand.
'I look out through my little bowl, where all I do is swim, I look at the boy who feeds me and wish I could be like him.
'He looks after me well, you realise...why, all I ever see are his big staring eyes
'But you see, little girl, very lonely I am...I mean, humans have family...a dad or a mam...'
I now spoke, surprisingly with ease, 'But how can you walk and talk, tell me please?'
'I wished and I wished until I found, not a fin but two feet upon the ground.'
Suddenly the fish changed, I could see, he held my hand tight and grinned, 'Come with me...
'I'd like a little partner, if I could have another wish, it would be that you, little girl, would turn into a fish.
'So close your eyes and wish with me that we can stay together...' I didn't wait to hear anymore, I pushed him and ran hell for leather.
I screamed and I screamed and screamed once again, 'Mummy, can't you hear me?' Then her face came peering into mine saying, 'What's the matter my baby?'
I've now got two goldfish in my tank
I've got the fish with feet to thank
The fish was lonely in my dream, of that I am aware
And my old goldfish is happy now that he is half of a pair.
So I hope my little story will help to make you think,
Even goldfish can get lonely - golly, mine just gave a wink!
