Barbara Erskine, The House of Echoes

I am a fan of the supernatural from time to time and where Barbara Erskin is concerned, she is the queen of this genre although there are sure to be other writers who may have others they have read and think differently. By far her best book is the House of Echoes which is about a family called the Grants who move from London, the main protagonist, Joss having inherited her mother's house overlooking the estuary in Essex. It is definitely one with events that reach an almighty climax, almost unrelentingly and they don't just occur at night time either for the house is haunted by characters that go back to the Wars of the Roses and has connections with witchcraft. The last to be tormented was Laura Manners who married Phillip Duncan who died mysteriously along with three other male members of the family. It has every ingredient imanginable to keep the reader turning the pages to the very end, keeping you spell bound as they resolve the curse that afflicts Belheddon Hall.
