The language to this was inspired in part by the short story, "The Scarlet Ibis."
Sorrow enfolds
Like a closing go to sleep flower
And the smell surrounds
Like a mournful song
Its melody dances
Into a heap on the ground
And all around
Breezes whisper
Softly the names of our dead
Who are laid to rest
Among best of the best
Fierce and fearless
In the ugly wrinkled face
Of this timeless strife called War
They fought for causes
Despite the losses
Bloodshed into salty scarlet rivers
Yet still the battle wore on
Until it was won
And now another has begun
As history repeats in muddied circles
Our soldiers fight for other’s rights
Future’s bright
And now we mourn and pray
For those lost
Some as recent as today
Say goodbye
Until petals unfurl
Releasing a sad song
Into blue sky and light
