- It is axiomatic, that with the increasing tendency within the population toward functional illiteracy,( 1 in 4 and rising incrementally ),the literary arts as a whole will experience a reduction in the numbers participating in,for instance the reading of books ,utilising public libraries and allied cultural experiences where sharing/participation is predicated on the expectation of universal or near universal literacy. We can,as a Society ( sounds a bit anti-thatcherite ) just about get away with it, just as the functionally illiterate person can studiously avoid being placed in an embarrassing situation where analysis and understanding of those funny squiggles on paper are required of them except when it comes to the "crunch " in a formal, perhaps contractual or legal setting. It is an integral part of the professional identity and calling of all who call themselves Writers,of one sort or another ,novelists, poets, playwrights,to have a commitment to the reinforcement and recovery of the noble aspiration of universal literacy. We,after all, are Writers not only to "up" our own game, but also that of those around us in wider civil society. After all,at some point in our quixotic endeavours,we want " them " to appreciate not only our talents, but also be enthused to actually buy our novels, our poems and our plays. Legacy necessitates sacrificial endeavour. We all stand on the shoulders of Giants. The surest way of recovering the vast swathes of popular literate territory lost and abandoned over the decades because of officially sanctioned sloth ,indifference and incompetence,is by evangelising our own part in the at Greater Cause. We can't hang on in the deluded hope that the eponymous Cavalry are going to show up at the last possible moment. To mangle the language,it ain't goin' to happen anytime soon. We are the Cavalry. And the bugle has sounded forth that shall never call retreat!
