  • " Another day, another government initiative " became something of a world weary cynical response to the Whitehall media announcements manufactured during the " Blair Years ".Things of course are very much different these days,Blair is no longer Pry-Minster (as they enunciate it on the BBC). And yet the announcements of initiatives just keep rolling along. In other walks of life, such repetitive behaviour could quite easily be categorised as a collective form of obsessive compulsive disorder;politics and governance and its bureaucracies merely being a concrete expression of the disorder itself?  A prime example of this phenomenon is to-day's (15 March ) media reporting of Ed.Sec.Gove's launch,("launch"?) of a history prize that ,according to the statement, will challenge youngsters to write vivid stories bringing particular periods to life. Michael Morpurgo, no less, authored an enlightening article on the subject of historical fiction and on the launch of the prize in the Daily Mail.(which I'm sure will be taken into account as a mitigating factor during sentencing!) .How many "days",for instance are already dedicated to various forms of the literary arts throughout the calendar,in order to encourage the promotion of poetry,novel-writing,books and just about every single facet and component of writing and literature? The answer to that one is,probably too many. And now we have another "special"competition aimed at the same indolent, disinterested agglomeration of practising a-literates.It's not that they have not learned, it's that on the whole they just can't be bothered to even want to try and learn. They are at their happiest when being spoon-fed. Good luck to plucky Michaerl Morpurgo and to Ed.Sec.Gove for contriving this jolly wheeze;and good luck to ,let's get this bit right, to the organisers of Chalke Valley History Festival in Wiltshire for lending their good name to this enterprise as sponsored by Waterstones (no apostrophe any longer),oh,and not forgetting ,the Daily Mail.
