Who helps you to write?

Do you write alone and never show you work to anyone? Or, like me, do you write then get your family / friends to read your stuff? Do you believe what your family / friends tell you? Do they give you frank advice?

I personally find writing very time consuming and as soon as I get my head stuck into my note book I'm lost in a world of my own. Fortunately, my wife shares my enthusiasm and this makes it much easier for me. Most days I spend a much as six hours writing, but I try to make a determined effort not to forget that there are other good things in life. I often seek my wife's views and opinions but that's where it ends. One's wife, family and friends are not the best to give honest feedback. Bless them they mean well. I don't know about you but the art and craft of good writing is so difficult, it is easy to give up. I have lost count of the sleepless nights in the early hours. The countless early morning dashes to the notebook with a good idea rattling around in my head. Then there are the mental blockages which drive me crazy. So why do I write, I sometimes ask myself?
I write because like all who write I find it challenging, inspiring and above all else
it gives me great satisfaction and pleasure to be the creator of a story whether it is good, bad or indifferent. Regards Rowland

I generally write alone. For children's fiction, I use my own children as a guide as to whether my work is any good. They are extremely critical and are not afraid to tell me if something is 'rubbish Mum!'

I have only just started writing (fiction) for the adult market and, like my art, a lot of it is just not that good. I'm a firm believer in the more you do, the better you get. Also, it doesn't matter how bad a piece is, there is always someone out there that will appreciate it greatly.

Here's to sowing 100 seeds for one brilliant bloom!

A very nice way of looking at it -- 100 seeds, one bloom. I'm still waiting for the bloom in my own work :D

I mainly write on my own. My family knows I love to write and are supportive, but not really that intrested in reading it for themselves. I have a big notebook that I just write dozens of stories in, but no one ever reads them. :) But thats OK- I love to write anyway!!

I like to show my work to other people, but only if:
a) I don't know them (like on writers circle!!!!)
b) The piece is polished and edited to the best of my ability
OR
c) It is for school and I need someone to edit it

When I was young, only my English teacher has the permission to read my works. Maybe, I don't want to listen to other's criticisms since they are not the ones who would be grading me...Later on, I have allowed a chosen few to share my poetry...
