Normally, I will stay away from voting (or responding) on a particular piece if I feel I have no interest in it. For instance, if someone wrote a piece in the romance genre, I'd avoid it like the plague because it would be hard for me to objectively critique a piece which I would not enjoy reading. It would also be very unfair if I gave someone a 1 out of 5 mainly because I don't like the topic, when the writing itself should garner a much higher review.
However, if I do notice common issues with grammar and other obvious mistakes, I'll post a followup to the post in an effort to help improve the writing of the author.
Finally, if I read piece where I am compelled to give a low score, I'll guarantee you that my reasons will be listed in a response, so it will not leave you wondering why a low score was given.
