Learning to write well

I have been attempting to write stories for the past few years. I get a great head start, but I could never organize my thoughts in one place. I would have papers here and there in scattered binders. I swear to you I would have post-it notes stacked on top of each other from when I got ideas at work. It was impossible to get my ideas structured. I needed help before I could ever hope to finish any of my stories. I just had too many details to filter through to get what I needed out of my stories.

That was when I started looking for some help on the Internet. After a few days I came across MyNovel and I have been able to create an entire plot (basic without detail) in about a week. By the next week I had my character profiles all put together and two diagrams with boxes, arrows, and flashy lights. By the end of the third week I have detailed chapter summaries of the first half of my book. I hope to have the rest of the chapters done by the fourth week. Finally, I will be able to start a story and know exactly how it will end. By the fifth or sixth week I will be writing my first novel that I will complete.

I hope to post some snipits for the writers here to tear apart. (wink) I have high hopes to complete it, but not that it will be publish worthy. The story will be publish worthy, but the writing, maybe not so much.

I only started working on my grammar a few years ago. I do not have any professional writing skills under my belt, but then again many authors don't have offical training and they are wonderful.

Seriously though, I hope to make some life long writing friends here.

Justin

Hi Justin,

Nice to meet you. I know exactly what you mean with trying to keep your ideas focused and grammar being an issue. *points at himself* has the same issues also.

I look forward to reading you work and hope you stick around on the site I am sure I can dig up plenty of fantasy stuff for you to tear apart for me if you want lol.

Cheers for the great introduction.

Again, welcome!

I take criticism pretty well, I think. I haven't shared my writing with anyone who would give anything but positive feedback. That can kind of give a false impression. I hope she is right, but only publicly sharing some writing will tell the true answer to my question.

Can I write?
If I can write, can I make a story?

These are things I hope to find out.

Sounds exciting; can't wait to read what you have written. I am inspired by the speed at which you have moved! I have to borrow a leaf from you and make time even if there is just never enough of it!!
Cheers

Hey Justin,

I know what you mean about grammar. I've been writing here and there for years and the most grammar I got taught was during school hours but as you say there are plenty of professional writers who are the same.

Looking forward to reading your work.

Grammar is also my biggest downfall. I've also have be working for a year or so trying to get my thoughts together. The research and reading on how I should go about writing the novel and also I've got two going at the same time. They say only work on one at a time but I don't want to give up either one. Unfortuantly I can't afford to buy the MyNovel but I try and put it's concepts in practice. Fantasy is also my favorite though I try and read other stuff also just to get a feel for them.

It isn't so much the concepts that are in MyNovel that help me so much, it's the organization that it provides. I can quickly access any notes that I have marked down for any person, place, object, chapter. The program gives a nice format start your work with.

I won't say it is perfect, but it has increased my productivity 200%. I'm positive that with the help of this tool I will be able to finish a story for the first time. I'm getting pretty excited about my story. I have the outlines for 18 chapters completed and I think there will be 4 maybe 5 more to go. Then I'll be able to create my new world.
