  • It was " National Libraries Day " on 4th.February,2012.Exclamation mark, ditto.Seriously ? It was the very first such commemorative day.I say commemorative, since how else can anyone describe such a " day " these days? A celebration? What exactly would the day ask us to celebrate ? That there's still libraries out there that remain open? Hardly worth getting all enthused about that. The survivors from The Titanic might as well have "celebrated" getting into a lifeboat, assuming they found one in the first place;which I suppose is analogous to libraries:if you do find one that's still open, celebrate!  National Libraries Day (NLD) have their own website and thus motivated by what I assumed to be my somewhat tardy enthusiasm and an under-developed civic conscience gland,I hastened to "sign up " and  "get involved " as they put it!  there's bound to be a lot going on I thought. The mighty google search engine displayed lots of links, featuring  the usual dull, but worthy, minor celebrity ,minor politician and minor just about everbody else you could think of;all enthusing and campaigning about library provision and its intrinsically vital role in human evolution or discovery of the atom or something else equally full of gravitas. It turns out that I am,individual member number 319. it also so happens that there are 6 groups "active" on the NLD site. The nearest one to me geographically happens to be in Doncaster and they were last "active"  4 weeks ago. There's nothing quite like that feeling of getting to a well advertised and backed Party early,is there?
